Walking and Cycling Routes in and around Huntly

After hosting numerous community engagement sessions in 2019 as part of our AB54 Paths Network project, where we invited members of the community to contribute, we have developed route cards and maps detailing the most popular local routes for walking and cycling in and around Huntly.

Huntly to Greenmyres

Huntly to Greenmyres

The cycle/walk route to Greenmyres eco-bothy uses a mixture of quiet roads, farm / windfarm tracks, and a loosely bound cycle path (put in by the Huntly Development Trust). The route is marked with green arrows on wooden signs. Suitable for hybrid/mountain bikes.

Portsoy Loop

Portsoy Loop

A 5km loop around Huntly using the Portsoy Road path. Mainly on tarmacked paths and pavements, with a section of hardpack dirt walkway beside a main road.

Along The River Deveron

Along The River Deveron

A wander along the River Deveron using quiet roads, foot and cycle paths, and informal walkers paths. Be careful of the paths next to the Deveron past the road bridge becoming overgrown in summer.

Battle Hill

Battle Hill

A gentle circular walk, through the native woodland of Battle Hill, on well-established dirt footpaths with pleasant views over Huntly and the surrounding area. More routes can be viewed on the information board at the main car park.

Bin Forest from Huntly

A 5km add-on through the Bin Forest to the Huntly 5km route. Mainly on forest double-track roads and occasionally dirt paths.

Clashmach Hill

Clashmach Hill

The Clashmach is one of the main features of Huntly, standing proud to the towns western side. The main path up is an old drover’s road, a gradually climbing grassy track lined by two fences.

This route loops around the secluded glen on the west side of the Clashmach hill and uses well established farm tracks and a quiet country road, suitable for walking and cycling, although an off-road / hybrid bike is recommended.

Gartly Moor

A pleasant walk through Gartly Moor Woodland using well-established forest roads and a section of the new Greenmyres paths.

Auchinderran

Auchinderran

A network of waymarked paths, developed in conjunction with the installation of the Auchinderran windfarm, providing a great off-road paths network for all abilities near the village of Aberchirder.

Dunbennan Wood

Dunbennan Wood

A short woodland walk on forest tracks around Dunbennan Wood on the Huntly to Dufftown road.

Fourman Hill

Fourman Hill

One of the best landmarks north-east of Huntly, with spectacular views in every direction. Following part of a historic road that The Mary Queen of Scots once travelled on.

Huntly to Milltown of Rothiemay

Huntly to Milltown of Rothiemay

A mainly off-road route from Huntly to the small town of Milltown of Rothiemay, using forest roads through Kinnoir Wood, a small section of quiet single-lane tarmac, and a farm track. Suitable for any off-road / hybrid bike.

Tarryblake Wood

Tarryblake Wood

A short circular walk, on a broad forest track though Tarryblake wood. Car parking for around 4 cars at the entrance to Tarryblake.

Queen Mary’s Bridge

A short, easy circular walk from Rothiemay following a mown grass path along the north bank of the Deveron to a historic bridge, reputedly built for a visit of Mary Queen of Scots to Rothiemay Castle.

Coreen Coffin Road & Lord Arthur’s Hill Loop

A circular route, that takes in the highest point of the Coreen Hills and an old coffin road, connecting Rhynie to Tullynessle.

The Mungo

The Mungo

Woodland walk in Kinnoir Woods and around the Hill of Mungo on established forest tracks with a few short steeper sections.
